HEALTH AND SAFETY
MATTERS
Health and Safety continues to be one of the most important topics within the construction industry — and
for good reason. Construction remains one of the UK’s highest-risk sectors, accounting for around 25% of all
fatal injuries to workers according to the latest HSE data.
At Phoenix, safety is not just a compliance requirement — it’s part of our culture. We want everyone to go
home safe, every day. That’s why we encourage everyone on site to look out for one another, follow safe
systems of work, and most importantly, speak up if something doesn’t look right.
The Importance of Reporting Near Misses
A near miss is any event that could have led to an accident, injury, or damage — but didn’t. While
it’s easy to overlook these moments because no one was hurt, near misses are some of our most
valuable learning opportunities. Every time a near miss is reported, we can investigate, identify the
root cause, and put measures in place to prevent it from happening again.
By sharing these reports, we not only protect ourselves but also our colleagues and everyone else on
site. Reporting isn’t about blame — it’s about prevention.
Learning From Data
Every report — whether it’s a near miss, an incident, or a positive observation — helps us see
the bigger picture. These reports allow us to spot trends, target training, and improve our
systems.
Thanks to everyone who consistently reports and communicates safety issues, we’ve been
able to take proactive steps across sites to reduce hazards and strengthen our controls.
Every piece of data counts — every report helps keep someone safe.
A Shared Responsibility
Everyone plays a part in maintaining a safe workplace — from operatives and apprentices to
supervisors and managers. If you see something unsafe, report it. If something feels off, raise it. You
can make a difference by taking just a few minutes to fill in a near-miss report or speak to your
supervisor.
Together, by staying alert, proactive, and supportive of one another, we can continue to build a
strong safety culture across all Phoenix Group divisions.
