MENTAL HEALTH
MATTERS
Health and wellbeing continue to be some of the most important topics within the construction industry —
and for good reason. Construction workers are significantly more likely to experience mental health
challenges, with long hours, pressure, physically demanding work and time away from family often having an
impact on wellbeing.
At Phoenix, mental health is just as important as physical safety. We want everyone to feel supported,
listened to and comfortable speaking up if they are struggling. Looking after one another, checking in with
colleagues and creating a positive working environment can make a real difference.
The Importance of Speaking Up
Mental health challenges are not always visible, and sometimes the hardest step can be starting a
conversation. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, low mood or feeling overwhelmed, talking to someone
early can help prevent issues from becoming bigger problems.
Speaking up is not a sign of weakness — it is a sign of strength. Whether that conversation is with a
colleague, supervisor, friend or family member, asking for support is important. No one should feel
they have to deal with things alone.
Looking Out for One Another
Construction is built on teamwork, and that extends beyond the work itself. Taking the time
to check in with someone, ask how they are doing or simply listen can have a lasting
impact.
Sometimes it’s the small things that matter most — noticing when someone seems quieter
than usual, struggling, or not themselves. By supporting one another and creating an
environment where people feel comfortable opening up, we can all play a role in improving
mental wellbeing across our sites and offices.
A Shared Responsibility
Everyone has a part to play in promoting positive mental health — from apprentices and operatives
to supervisors, managers and office teams. Creating a culture where people feel safe to talk,
supported when they need help and respected for speaking up benefits everyone.
Together, by continuing to look out for one another and encouraging open conversations, we can
help break the stigma surrounding mental health in construction and build a stronger, healthier
workforce across Phoenix Group divisions.
